 CPD Direct Access is a mentoring programme, which aims to help young lawyers to achieve their potential through guidance and constructive feedback from senior lawyers who would support them in their professional development and personal growth.

Each CPD Direct Access session will feature different mentors who will offer an opportunity for young lawyers to expand their knowledge and network with diverse practice areas.  Mentorship is a reciprocal process, where both mentees and mentors are able to learn from each other.  Mentees learn from the experience and knowledge of their mentors, and mentors learn to see from the mentees’ perspectives.

Speakers

Sitpah Selvaratnam qualified in 1988 with a First Class Honours degree in law from the University of Wales, Cardiff, and in 1991 with a LLM degree from the University of Cambridge.  She was conferred a Diploma in International Commercial Arbitration by the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (“CIArb”) in 2008, upon completion of study at Keble College,Oxford.

Practising law in Malaysia since 1991, she focused on corporate insolvency, and commercial and shipping litigation and disputes.  She represents diverse Malaysian and foreign corporations and commercial interests in the High Court and the Appellate Courts of Malaysia. 

Beyond the sphere of maritime law, Sitpah has also worked with consortiums of bankers and financiers in banking and corporate insolvency litigation.

She is regularly appointed as an arbitrator in international, regional, and domestic references on commercial, international trade, commodities and shipping disputes, including disputes over the sale of assets of an insurance company, claims for damages for unjust enrichment on a price variation, for demurrage, for non-delivery and non-acceptance of cargo, for breach of a ship repair contract, on disputes over hire of vessel for offshore support services, and for port pilotage services, and more.

Sitpah has been appointed in more than 30 arbitral references by various parties, such as the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (“SIAC”) and Asian International Arbitration Centre (“AIAC”, formerly known as the Kuala Lumpur Regional Centre for Arbitration (“KLRCA”)) as sole, presiding, emergency or party nominated arbitrator.  She is on the panel of Arbitrators of Singapore Chambers of Maritime Arbitration (“SCMA”), the American Arbitration Association’s International Centre for Dispute Resolution (“ICDR”), the Emirates Maritime Arbitration Centre (“EMAC”), and on the list of arbitrators of the London Court of International Arbitration (“LCIA”).  Sitpah is also a supporting member of the London Maritime Arbitrators Association (“LMAA”), and a fellow of CIArb and the Malaysian Institute of Arbitrators (“MIArb”).

Sitpah is the author of the book The Arrest of the Superyacht Equanimity: How Malaysia reclaimed what was hers (released in April 2021); co-author of the admiralty chapter in Bullen & Leake & Jacob’s Malaysian Precedents of Pleadings; contributor to the Malaysian chapter of Recognition and Enforcement of Judgments in Civil and Commercial Matters, published by Hart Publishing; and country reporter for Malaysia to the Asia Pacific Arbitration Reporter of Singapore (2014–2017).  She has been recognised by Chambers Asia, Asia Pacific Legal 500, and others professional publications.

Raja Eileen Soraya is a partner and head of Raja, Darryl & Loh’s healthcare practice group.  She is a graduate of the London School of Economics and Political Science.  She is a member of the Honourable Society of the Inner Temple and was called to the Bar of England and Wales in 1994 prior to being admitted as an advocate and solicitor of the High Court of Malaya in 1997.  She has appeared as counsel in the superior courts in Malaysia, including the Appellate Court, and has many reported cases in law journals.

She is the Immediate Past President of the Medico-Legal Society of Malaysia.  She serves the local legal profession as a trainer in Bar Council’s advocacy training courses and is currently a member of the Bar Council Advocacy Training Committee.

Kenny Lai graduated in 1998 with Bachelor of Laws (Hons) degree from the Thames Valley University, London (now known as University of West London).  He was called to the Malaysian Bar in 2000.

He is currently a partner in his own firm Choong Meng Sze & Lai.  He is the former Chairman of the Perak Bar Committee from 2014–2016 and was the Perak Bar Representative to the Bar Council from 2013–2014, 2016–2018.  He is currently the Chairperson for Perak Bar’s Alternative Dispute Resolution and  Publications Committees.

He was a former Co-Chairperson of the Bar Council Court Liaison Committee, former Chairperson of the Bar Council Law Reform and Special Areas Committee, former Co-Chairperson of the Bar Council Sports Committee, and former Deputy Chairperson of the Bar Council National Young Lawyers Committee.  He co-organised the Malaysia/Singapore Law Games in Ipoh in 2018.  He is currently still an active member of several committees of the Bar Council. 

He has also served as a web reporter during the 2007, 2009, and 2011 Malaysian Law Conference as well as moderator for the Siri Pemikiran Kritis talks organised by the National Young Lawyers Committee together with Youth for Change.

He has 21 years of practical experience in civil and criminal litigation as well as some conveyancing work.  He focuses on criminal and civil litigation.  He is a mediator and a mediation trainer with the Malaysian Mediation Centre (“MMC”) of the Bar Council.  He is a also civil and criminal advocacy trainer with the Advocacy Training Course organised by the Bar Council Advocacy Training Committee.

Moderator

Richard Wee Thiam Seng was admitted as an advocate and solicitor of the High Court of Malaya in 1999.
